Tennis Court Oath

The Tennis Court Oath has little to do with tennis but rather with The French Revolution. A group of revolutionaries called The Third Estate, whose activities were declared illegal by King Louis XVI, gathered in a in a hand ball court near the Palace of Versailles on 20 June 1789 and stated "The National Assembly, considering that it has been summoned to establish the constitution of the kingdom. . . decrees that all members of this assembly shall immediately take a solemn oath not to separate. . . until the constitution of the kingdom is established on firm foundations. . ."
